Is there anything as decadent as homemade RED VELVET CAKE?
I recently received a request for this recipe that I learned from my mother over 50 years ago. It's tried and true, one of a kind, and still the BEST I've ever tasted.
Old Fashioned Red Velvet Cake
½ c. Crisco 1 ½ c. sugar
2 oz red food color 1 tsp. Salt
1 Tblsp. Cocoa 1 tsp. Vanilla
2 eggs 2 c. flour
1 c. buttermilk 1 Tblsp. Vinegar
1 tsp. Baking soda
Cream sugar & Crisco. Add food color. Add eggs and mix. Separately, sift flour, measure, add cocoa & sift 3 more times. Add this alternately with buttermilk to the sugar mixture. Add vanilla & salt and beat well. Dissolve soda in vinegar and fold into mixture gently.
Grease two 9” pans, don’t flour. Pour in and bake at 325˚ for 40-45 minutes. Remove from pans while still slightly warm.
Icing:
1 c. milk ½ c. flour ¼ tsp. Salt
Mix & cook until so thick it almost forms a ball.
Cool thoroughly.
Cream: 1 c. granulated sugar & 1 c. butter
Add to flour mixture & beat well. Add 2 tsp. Vanilla & spread on cooled cake.
The BEST ever!
